South of Bari: Where the Coast Gets Beautiful
Heading south from Bari on the SS16 coastal road, the landscape changes quickly from urban sprawl to the low limestone cliffs and turquoise water that define this stretch of the Adriatic. Here are the beaches worth stopping at:
Torre a Mare
The closest proper beach to Bari — just 12 kilometres south of the city centre, about 15 minutes by car. Torre a Mare is a small seaside village with a mix of free public beach and lidi (paid beach clubs with sunbeds and umbrellas). The water is calm and clear, popular with Bari locals for an after-work swim. Parking is available along the seafront promenade, though it fills up on summer weekends — arrive before 9 am to be safe.
Polignano a Mare
The most spectacular beach destination within easy reach of Bari — and one of the most photographed towns in all of Puglia. Polignano sits on dramatic limestone cliffs above sea caves and small coves, about 35 kilometres south of the city (30–35 minutes on the SS16 or A14 motorway). The main beaches are Lama Monachile (a small pebbly cove in the old town, very scenic but busy) and several lidi accessible by stairs cut into the rock. Paid parking is available near the old town at around €1–2 per hour. Arrive early on summer mornings to secure a spot.
Mola di Bari
A quieter alternative to Polignano, Mola di Bari is a small fishing port with a pleasant seafront promenade and several free beaches. About 20 kilometres south of Bari (20 minutes by car). Less touristy than Polignano, it is a good choice if you prefer a more local atmosphere — and parking is easier.
Monopoli
About 45 kilometres south of Bari (40–45 minutes on the A14), Monopoli offers a wider choice of beaches than Polignano, including the popular Capitolo area known for its clear water and well-organised lidi. The historic harbour and old town are also worth exploring. Parking near the Capitolo beaches is signposted and generally easier to find than at Polignano.
North of Bari: Calmer Waters and Fewer Crowds
If you prefer a quieter beach with easier parking and less tourist traffic, the coast north of Bari is worth exploring. The beaches are less dramatic than those to the south but often calmer and less crowded.
Santo Spirito
A coastal suburb just 12 kilometres north of Bari (15 minutes by car), Santo Spirito has a sandy beach with shallow, calm water — ideal for families with young children. There are several lidi and some free beach areas. It is the easiest quick beach option from Bari when you want a relaxed half day.
Giovinazzo
About 15 kilometres north of Bari, Giovinazzo is a charming small town with a beautiful medieval old town and a seafront promenade. The beach is a mix of sand and fine gravel with clear water. A lovely combination of beach and town exploration, with generally easy parking — a good choice for a relaxed morning swim followed by lunch at a local restaurant.
When to Go: Water Temperature and Crowds
- June — water around 22–23 °C, beaches not yet crowded, ideal for comfortable swimming and easy parking
- July and August — water 26–28 °C, peak season, very busy at weekends especially near Polignano; arrive early
- September — water still warm at 24–25 °C, crowds thin out, often the best month for a beach–sightseeing mix
- October — cooler but the coast is beautiful for walks; swimming possible on warmer days (water around 20 °C)
Getting There: Driving and Parking from Borgo dei Pioppi
All the beaches above are easiest to reach by car. From Borgo dei Pioppi Cozy Apartment on Via Fanelli, you have direct access to the SS100 ring road connecting quickly to the SS16 coast road south, or to the SP2 heading north towards Santo Spirito and Giovinazzo. Local trains connect Bari Centrale to Polignano a Mare and Monopoli in 30–45 minutes, but for beach hopping with towels and equipment, the car is far more practical.
